Deck the Halls with these 3 Easy DIY Christmas Garlands You Can Try

Estimated read time 3 min read

Decorative garlands can add a festive touch to your home during the holiday season, but buying handmade or custom ones can be quite expensive. To save some money, I decided to get creative and make three DIY Christmas garlands this year.

Not only did it save me a bundle, but it also allowed me to personalize my holiday decorations just the way I wanted!

So, I decided to share them with you so you can end up saving a lot as well. They’re as follows:

Dried Orange Garland

I’ve recently fallen in love with dried orange garlands as a budget-friendly Christmas decor idea. They are incredibly easy and affordable to make – all you need are some fresh oranges and a fishing line.

Plus, they make your home smell amazing! Crafting these garlands is a breeze, and you can get creative by using other citrus fruits like grapefruit or lemon.

You can also add additional elements like beads, tassels, bay leaves, cinnamon sticks, etc., to enhance the look. String them on the fishing line for a floating effect, or use twine or ribbon for a different aesthetic.

I personally hung my DIY dried orange garland in the kitchen and used leftover oranges as tree decorations both indoors and outdoors. You can use them in various places around your home, such as banisters, mantles, doorways, or mirrors.

And the best part? You can compost them at the end of the season, reducing storage clutter.

Brass Bell Garland

One of my favorite DIY garlands is the brass bell garland, which I put together in just 5 minutes! Brass bells are a classic holiday decoration, and this DIY project is super quick and easy. I hung this garland of mini brass bells across the window, behind the Christmas tree, and paired it with a string of twinkling lights.

You can get creative with it and use it as a mantle decoration, along a picture frame, or even above the kitchen sink. Plus, any leftover bells can be used as ornaments on the tree, as charming additions to your gift wrapping, or in your Christmas table settings!

Wood Bead Garlands

Wood bead garlands are another holiday favorite of mine, and the best part is that they can be reused each season! Crafting wood bead garlands is a straightforward process, but I have a couple of helpful tips for you before you start:

I typically make my wood bead garlands using simple round natural wood beads. However, you can get creative and customize them to your liking.

Consider painting the beads, using different shapes, or adding other elements like tassels, mini ornaments, feathers, or snippets of greenery to make them uniquely yours.

Interestingly, my daughters actually took the wood bead garlands I made before I could put them on the tree this year. These garlands are incredibly versatile and can be used in various ways.

You can place them on the mantle, around mirrors or windows, or even arrange them in a dough bowl on the kitchen counter or on an ottoman. They add a charming touch to any holiday decor!

These DIY Christmas garland ideas are a wonderful way to add a personal and festive touch to your holiday decor while staying on a budget. Have fun crafting and decorating for the holiday season!
